Rudbeckias and Sedums
The borders in the gardens are full of bright autumnal colour this month. The deep yellow rudbeckias resemble the golden rays of low autumn sunshine and the vivid hot pink sedum flowers clash with their succulent green leaves.

Apples
The trees in the Top Fruit Garden are laden with ripe apples, so now is a great time to visit. The garden has a selection of varieties, and demonstrates different training and pruning techniques. Garden Organic’s annual Apple Day is 5th October.

Rainbow chard
Rainbow chard is a great way of bringing some luminous colour to your garden or allotment in autumn and winter. It also tastes great! You can see it growing in the Organic Allotment Garden and the ornamental beds of the Biodynamic Garden.

Chinese lanterns
Chinese lanterns adorn Physalis alkekengi in the Herb Garden. The papery lanterns look wonderful at this time of year, with hues of oranges and reds making this plant a great autumn ornamental. The fruits also have homeopathic uses.

Hoverfly feeding on Goldenrod (Solidago)
Many insects are still active at this time of year so ensure you are still growing plants that will provide them with nectar and pollen. Encouraging beneficial insets such as hoverflies can help control pest populations as their larvae eat pests like aphids. One of the most attractive plants at this time of year is the Goldenrod (Solidago). Their bright yellow flowers are still attracting numerous hoverflies and butterflies around Ryton Gardens.

Japanese Anemone
Now is a great time to see the great swathes of white Japanese anemone that sweep through the borders in the Herb Garden. Anemones are great additions to the garden providing valuable late summer and autumn colour, filling gaps left by perennials and adding height and interest.
